Our History

The St. John Missionary Baptist Church Family owes a debt of gratitude to the chartered members, who invested sweat, tears and time in the year of our Lord, 1985, in the month of June. Although they were few in number, they were baptized believers in the Lord who held a flaming torch that could not be quenched by the winds and waves of a ‘satanic turbulence’. These members were counseled by Moderators and Pastors who inherited the Prophet’s Mantle, the Shepherd’s Heart and the Apostle’s Spirit to “rightly divide the word of Truth.

The 33 chartered Members were taken in as members of the St. John Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Johnny Green, Pastor at that time of the Mt. Elem Baptist Church, in the the home of Bro. H. E. Ervin. These members were mainly derivative from the Bethlehem Baptist Church, and some having no Church affiliation. The first place that was chosen for worship was a small vacant Church at 1107 Marshall St, owned by the Pilgrim Tabernacle Church of Deliverance. These members toiled night and day to remodel the building and add a Fellowship Hall. In July the Rev. Tommie G. Williams was called to be the Pastor. Shortly after that transportation was purchased for its members. Air condition was also installed in the building. The evidence is indisputably clear that these members started from scratch.

God continued to bless St. John. He sent Rev. Waylon Sias to shepherd the flock as they followed the will of God to build a new church building. God was always in control of the growth and movement of this Church. During the struggle to complete and occupy this building, God saw fit to send Rev. T. H. Davis, who prayerfully led them into this sanctuary in February, 1991. Finally they were here; but in five years two more Pastors came and went-namely –Rev. Charles Johnson and Rev. Reginald Jordan. Each Pastor contributed significantly to the church, but it was praying time at St John. A new day was dawning, like minded people were uniting in prayer.
